How it’s calculated
- From CTC to gross
- Monthly CTC minus employer PF (and employer ESI if the employee is covered) gives gross salary.
- Deductions
- Employee PF on Basic + DA (capped at the PF wage ceiling unless you untick it), ESI if gross is within the ESI ceiling, and the state’s Professional Tax slab for that gross.
- Income tax
- Yearly tax on gross salary less the standard deduction (and, in the old regime, PF, other 80C-type investments up to ₹1,50,000 and Professional Tax), with the rebate and 4% cess, divided by 12.
Questions
Why is in-hand salary lower than CTC ÷ 12?
CTC includes the employer’s own PF (and ESI) contribution, which never reaches the salary account, and then the employee’s PF, ESI, Professional Tax and income tax are deducted from gross pay.
Which tax regime should I choose?
The new regime is the default and has lower rates with fewer deductions; the old regime can work out better with large investments, HRA or home-loan interest. Compare both here, and ask a tax adviser for your own case.
Is there no tax up to ₹12 lakh?
In the new regime, the rebate means no tax on taxable income up to ₹12 lakh. With the ₹75,000 standard deduction, that is salary of up to ₹12.75 lakh, with marginal relief just above it.
